As the weather warms up, many of us are contemplating ways to make the most of the sunshine. Electric scooters have emerged as a popular option for zipping around town, and if you're in the market for one, you may or may not have heard of the Hiboy S2. Though Hiboy isn’t as well known as other major e-scooter brands like Segway, they make some pretty solid products, and the S2, priced at USD 299.99 back before tariffs, is an example of that. Here at Life Advice, we've put The S2 to the test to help you decide if it's the right choice for you.
Range and Speed
Range and speed are everything when it comes to e-scooters, and the Hiboy S2 doesn’t give you bad value for your money. Hiboy claims the S2 can travel up to 27 kilometers on a single charge. In my experience, the real-world range is closer to 20 kilometers. While this was a bit disappointing, it is important to note that I got 20 kilometers out of the scooter while I was navigating a slight incline and contending with a bit of a breeze. I’ve gotten even less range on some rides, around 10-12 kilometers, when the temperature feels like 0 degrees Celsius or below. On the plus side, the Hiboy S2 charges reliably and without any issues within 6 hours. The scooter also handles moderate hills without issue but steep hills will give you a problem, especially if your battery is below 2 bars. Hiboy claims the S2 can reach a maximum speed of 30 kilometers. I found that it topped out at around 28 km/h. This slight difference from the claimed speed wasn't a major letdown, as 28 kilometers is still pretty fast. In short, the S2 performed well in terms of its speed but the range was a bit of a letdown. For the price, the S2 still offers pretty great range.
features
The Hiboy S2 has some pretty nice features, which enhance its value and make it a better option for people seeking a cheap but good e-scooter. It's easy to fold and unfold, making it a breeze to carry on public transport or store in tight spaces. The scooter is also relatively lightweight, around 32 pounds, furthering its portability. Beyond its nice folding, the S2 is packed with great features. The app connectivity allows you to easily monitor crucial information like battery life and speed. The remote locking feature provides an added layer of security. Furthermore, the Hiboy S2 boasts a bright and effective lighting system, improving visibility during those dusk or dawn rides. Hiboy’s claimed regenerative braking is a smart feature that helps recapture energy, potentially extending the battery life. Overall, the dual braking system of both a mechanical disc brake and an electric brake is reliable and provides responsive stopping power. The Hiboy S2 is also UL certified, which is a great indicator of its adherence to safety standards, and is a requirement for me when ever I’m buying an e-scooter or e-bike.
issues
The Hiboy S2 is a pretty good scooter overall, but it has some issues. It is equipped with solid tires, which offer the significant advantage of never going flat. The problem is that this benefit comes with a trade-off in ride comfort. The solid tires can make the scooter feel firm and a bit harsh, especially when riding over uneven surfaces. The scooter also comes with just a bit of rear suspension, which doesn’t really help to improve ride comfort that much. Additionally, these tires can be more prone to slipping, and I can personally account for how much times I have slipped, particularly on wet pavement. The scooter’s front display is good, but I wish it had a percentage based battery readout as opposed to its current bar based one.
my hiboy customer service story
When you buy a product, especially an E-scooter, you have to make sure that not only the product is good, but the company providing it to you has friendly, accessible, and reliable, post-sales support. That’s why I decided to include this portion in my review to help you better understand if the S2 is the right scooter for you. My personal experience with Hiboy's customer service has been impressive. After purchasing my first Hiboy S2 around September of 2024, I encountered a issue with the battery range. Through e-mail correspondence, they notified me that they were going to send a replacement battery, free of charge. After I installed the battery and tried my scooter out, the problem remained. This process repeated for 2 more batteries until Hiboy decided to replace my entire scooter free of charge after I sent them my old scooter and batteries. The new scooter has been working without any of the previous issues since I got it in late December 2024. Overall, Hiboy’s customer service is very good, and even though they take a long time to respond (they reply within 24 hours on weekdays and almost never on weekends), the quality of their customer service enhances their brand, makes the S2 an even better option for potential buyers.
verdict
The Hiboy S2 is a good option for people looking for a cheap e-scooter to enjoy the summer weather. Its nice features give it great value for its price, its speed is fast and good for most urban settings, its range could use some improvement but still serves you well, its solid tires come with their pros and cons, and Hiboy, the S2’s manufacturer, has reliable customer service. Overall, I’d recommend the Hiboy S2.
