If you ask me, E-bikes are pretty magical devices.
They offer the user the many benefits of biking, such as zipping through traffic, lowering your carbon footprint, cheaper ownership and maintenance costs compared to cars, not having to buy insurance, and better mental and physical health, without getting you sweaty and tired.
So it’s no wonder why these battery powered bicycles have soared to popularity all of a sudden. And with all these E-bikes zipping around, you may have started contemplating getting one yourself.
Which leads me to presenting the Aventon Aventure 2 to you. This E-bike is a class 3 fat bike that comes with 4 pedal assist levels: Eco, Tour, Sport, and Turbo, as well as a pure-electric power throttle option. Eco gives the least assistance and Turbo the most.
This bike is also the next bike in Aventon’s popular Aventure line after the Aventure 1, and one of the most popular Fat tire E-bikes in North America.
After 3 plus months of testing, Life Advice presents this comprehensive review, which gives you all the info you need to help you decide if the Aventure 2 is the bike for you.
Range and Speed
The Aventure 2 has great range and excellent speed.
When Aventon says it can hit a 45 kph top speed, they're not kidding. It's genuinely easy to get there and stay there, especially when you're pedaling in the higher assist levels like Sport and Turbo.
In fact, I have at times gone over the claimed max speed, going up to 48 kph when pedaling really fast in Turbo on a slight downhill. The fact the bike can go so fast may be scary for some, but for me, it makes riding feel super fun and effortless.
And the range? Also great. Aventon claims up to 96 kilometers while riding with the Eco assist level on flat terrain, 25 Celsius temperature, and no wind. I’ve found that to be pretty accurate.
It's good to remember that how far you actually go can change a lot. Things like how windy it is, the temperature outside, whether you're going up hills or cruising on flat ground, and especially which assist level you're using, all play a big part in how much range you actually get.
After putting it through many real-world tests, I found that you can pretty consistently get around 50 kilometers on a single charge if you're using the Turbo assist level, battling a bit of wind, going up some hills, and the temperature is around 15 degrees Celsius.
That's still a really solid performance and more than enough for most average daily commutes and weekend adventures.
features
The Aventure 2 is loaded with cool features that make riding super fun.
One of my favorites is definitely the Aventon app. It tracks things like how many calories you've burned, how many trees you've "saved" by riding instead of driving, and even how many kilograms of CO2 you've kept out of the air. I like seeing this because it's a cool way to visualize my positive impact.
Besides that, the app also allows you to track your entire ride in a way the records where you went on the map, the elevation increase, top speed, average speed, and riding time. The app also stays connected to the bike throughout rides.
The bike has a fantastic torque sensor system, which makes pedaling feel incredibly natural and smooth. The motor gives more or less power depending on how fast you pedal, making every ride feel good.
The overall build quality of the Aventure 2 is also top-notch, it feels really sturdy and built to last. Plus, it comes with practical things like integrated fenders (no more mud splashes!) and a strong rear rack, making it super handy for commuting or hauling your gear, in fact, I even carry my bike lock on it.
As well, the Aventure 2’s good brakes help you stop on a dime. Last but not least, the walk assist feature is a lifesaver for those times you need to push the bike, especially up a tricky incline.
Aventon hasn’t pulled much punches when it comes to packing the Aventure 2, which is both UL certified and IPX4 water resistant, with loads of great features.
issues
Now, even though the Aventon Aventure 2 is a nice e-bike, there are a couple some issues I noticed.
First off, I recently got a flat tire on the rear wheel of my 3 month old Aventure 2, despite not knowingly going on any sharp terrain. This problem proves that the Aventure 2’s tires aren’t very puncture-resistant after all.
Also, sometimes, when you're trying to lock the battery into the frame, it doesn't quite click into place on the first try. You might have to give it a second or third push to make sure it's really secure, which is a bit annoying.
A slightly bigger problem is that the Aventure 2 doesn't have any built-in security features.
Though, as I mentioned before, Aventon has included lots of handy features on this bike, a security feature is not one of them.
Unlike some other e-bikes that might have alarms or GPS tracking, (like the Aventure 2’s sequel, the Aventure 3) this one relies completely on you using an external lock.
So, considering how valuable this bike is, you'll definitely want to grab a really good, sturdy bike lock to keep it safe.
verdict
The Aventon Aventure 2 is a great ebike.
With good range and excellent speed, a great companion app, solid build quality, and a walk assist feature, among other things, the Aventon Aventure 2 makes up for its not-so puncture-resistant tires and pretty significant shortcomings in the security department.
